Relief art
The SAM has the world’s largest collection of mountain reliefs
It comprises more than 270 items showing how the art of relief building developed in the course of 200 years. It spans the years from the works of Joachim Eugen Müller (1752–1833), Xaver Imfeld (1853–1909), Eduard Imhof (1895–1986) to the relief artists of today such as Toni Mair (born 1940) and recent reliefs built on a digital basis. Moreover the collection of reliefs illustrates the various purposes for which they were produced: e.g. aids for map production, reliefs for didactic purposes, strategic reliefs for military purposes, tourist and leisure advertising.
Section: relief Mont Rose 1:25 000, work of Xaver Imfeld based of his measurements from 1877/1878
